Must be Nice…

“It must be nice to only work half the year.” How many times have teachers heard this from some passerby with a snooty voice? Instead of going on for 10 minutes about the ignorance behind such an erroneous statement, I’ve learned to say, “It’s great being a teacher!”

I went to school for six years to have this life, and by-golly I am quite pleased with the way things turned out. Tomorrow I go back to work for another (my 7th!) school year. As I get the coffee pot ready for the morning and pick out my outfit (a nightly ritual because I have little time in the morning for such frivolous tasks) I cannot help but try to sort the excitement from the apprehension.
Tomorrow brings an end to my full time mom gig. Being able to spend the summer with my children is priceless. But, there’s nothing like being a teacher. Each year I get to start from scratch. The brand new school supplies are just waiting for the next class of new students. On Wednesday when the students begin class, I will be there to greet them with just as much excitement and nervousness as each of them have.
“Must be nice…” It sure is, folks! Teachers are a lucky group. We spend each day with fabulous students doing things we love doing (for me that’s reading books).
I tip my hat to all of the teachers out there. As you start another year, I wish you luck and lots of patience.
God Bless,
The Displaced City Girl
